Parkway Place residents and staff came together today to celebrate the senior living community’s 25th anniversary. The event included key speakers, certificates of appreciation presented to members and organizations in Houston, and the unveiling of a commemorative mural. Additional attendees included representatives from local churches, businesses, and members of the community at large.
“Being able to celebrate 25 years of serving senior adults in Houston is special,” said Tim List, Parkway Place executive director. “We have overcome so much together, and we have done it through faith, compassion, and perseverance.”
Parkway Place is owned and operated by Buckner Retirement Services, part of faith-based nonprofit Buckner International, which has served children, families and seniors across Texas and internationally for 144 years. Speakers at the event included President and CEO of Buckner International Albert Reyes, President of Buckner Retirement Services Charlie Wilson, and List.
“We chose the theme of being “rooted” for today’s celebration,” said Reyes. “In the words of Psalm 1, we want our work to be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water.”
That theme was reflected in a commemorative mural unveiled during the celebration that honors the roots of Parkway Place in the Houston community. The tree depicted in the mural is also representative of an oak tree in Paris, Texas under which Buckner International was founded in 1879.
As a part of the celebration, Parkway Place awarded certificates of appreciation to several people and organizations in Houston. Recipients included Ella Phelps, who moved into Parkway Place in 1998, Chamberlin University for their student collaboration with Parkway Place, Tallowood Baptist Church for bringing water and love during the Feb. 2021 freeze, John Henry Donnelly, who residents watched grow up as he volunteered at Parkway Place over the years, Major and Faithful Paws for bringing joy to so many residents, and West Briar Middle School for brining generations of children and seniors together.
Parkway Place opened its doors in 1998, but Buckner Retirement Services’ involvement in the Houston area extends all the way back to 1955 when it opened Buckner Haven, its second senior living community in Texas. Located less than five miles from where Parkway Place stands, Buckner Haven served Houston seniors for 42 years. When Buckner leaders saw the need for a new, state of the art community for Houston seniors, Parkway Place was built.
After 25 years, Parkway Place is still one of Houston’s premiere continuing care communities, and its roots in the area are even stronger today. Those who call Parkway Place their home know it is a place built on connections, where you live in the company of other seniors with similar passions, experiences, and the values reflected in the ministry of Buckner. The core mission is to enhance and enrich the lives of seniors by providing quality care in the communities where they work and live.
“I like to think of today’s party as a reawakening for Parkway Place. It’s an opportunity to celebrate our history and our future,” said List.
Following the ceremony, residents enjoyed a reception with Houston-inspired hors d’oeuvres while staff provided tours of the community for guests.
Parkway Place is home to approximately 250 senior adults in its independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing residences.
